NFL training camps are just around the corner and that means it’s time to take your hard earn money and gamble it away.
I will be running a weekly article during the NFL season and playoffs picking every game against the spread, but before we get there we are going to through the team win totals Two Divisions at a time.
My picks are based partly on research, partly on gut feel and mainly on the fact I watch entirely too much football every week.
For each team I will be giving an Under, Over or Pass and a few thoughts on why.
We are using Bet365 for all the markets
Buffalo Bills (6.5) PASS
The Bills finished 7-9 last year and basically return the exact same players less corner Stephon Gilmore but under a new coaching staff. The key to me is can Sammy Watkins stay healthy and as someone who has lost multiple fantasy seasons because of lack of ability to stay healthy I’m not willing to lay money down on the same gamble. In saying that the already strong defense should see a boost from last year’s top two draft picks Reggie Ragland and Shaq Lawson. To me, the variables on this team are just too great and I would leave it alone.
Miami Dolphins (7.5) OVER
I am a Ryan Tannehill fan, I also have hooked my fantasy season to Devante Parker so I’m all in on the Dolphins train. The key to the Dolphins will be can they improve their 18th ranked scoring defense if they can see improvement on that side of the ball and Tannehill stays healthy I can see them pushing 10 wins and a wild card berth
New England Patriots (12.5) OVER
Needing 13 wins will scare a lot of people away from this bet, but not me. Adding Brandon Cooks and getting Gronk back will make the Patriots offense down right scary. I also think that Mike Gillislee will give them an upgrade of Blount. On the defensive side of the ball, Logan Ryan is gone and but has been replaced with Stephon Gilmore from division rival Bills. 16-0 may not happen here like a few people are predicting but I can easily see them at 15-1, 14-2 when it is all said and done.
New York Jets (5.5) UNDER
Under all the way to the bank. I don’t care how good their D Line is, the offense will be historically bad. The Quarterback situation is a mess, their best receiver is Quincy Enunwa and their starting RB is 32-year-old Matt Forte. To top it all off the offensive line is also a mess. The AFC East also played the toughest schedule in the NFL with the out of Division games coming against the AFC West and NFC South, the worst team in those divisions is more than likely the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees vs Hackenberg who are you picking? I see 1 possible win for the entire year for the Jets and that is against the Jaguars and I’m not even confident there.
Dallas Cowboys (NO TOTAL)
There is currently no Totals for the Cowboys. I assume the oddsmakers are waiting for news on the possible Zeke suspension. Once they are back on the markets I will write a prediction.
New York Giants (8.5) OVER
The Giants have issues offensively but their #2 scoring Defence should still be able to carry them to 9 wins. If Eli Manning can return to form and they can put some kind of semblance of an Offensive line in front of him I can easily see this team getting to the 10-12 win range.
Philadelphia Eagles (8.5) UNDER
The Carson Wentz bandwagon is starting to gain momentum but I’m not on it. While the addition of Alshon Jeffrey and Torrey Smith will certainly improve the receiving core I think Wentz is at least a year away from being a capable starter. Defensively outside of the front seven is strong but the secondary has very worried. I’m taking the under here
Washington Redskins (7.5) OVER
Unlike the Eagles and Wentz I’m riding the Kirk Cousins bandwagon. I also love the Pryor signing and think that on a 1-year deal he will play lights out to try to make it big in free agency next year. If they can get anything from the running game and 2016 1st rounder Josh Doctson the offense will be one of the best in the league. Defensively they add my favorite 2017 draft pick Jonathan Allen and last years Bills standout Zach Brown. 8-8 to me seems like an easy get for this team.
